  • Gramotones – Horror Draped In Dry Ice (Halloween Special)

Halloween really is a great time of year?
The temperature has just taken a dip, there is a real chill in the air.
And this Halloween night the streets will be filled with fun, mischief and possibly a little horror.
There are modern day trick or treaters.
And there are those who stick with traditions of years gone by.
Many will be dressed in Scream masks, maybe donning Freddie Krueger bladed gloves or even in the guise of a Disney Princess. Door bell rung they’ll holler the words “Trick or Treat” in the hoped exchange for money or candy. (that’s sweeties to us) Kids love it….and yes, most adults with kids will possibly admit to secretly enjoying the nights events.
Then there’s the old guard, you know the ones? Don’t you?
From these houses kids are dispatched dressed as witches and ghouls, skeletons, freaks, zombies and vampires.
A knock on the door of these houses and you’ll receive plentiful amounts of fruit and monkey nuts in exchange for telling a joke, reciting some kind of spooky poem or perhaps even singing a song.
It’s the latter that Manchester band The Gramotones opted for this year.
Horror Draped in Dry Ice was made available at 8PM tonight on Youtube and has already proven a big hit. Check it out.
    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hwTi-UB2oU]

Signed to “Howling Rhythm’ it made perfect sense to release as a seasonal party piece. It’s available as a limited free download too, so be quick before all the ghosts n goblins snaffle it up..
    What’s it like?
Clearly, a fair bit of thought has gone into making this record. And the timing aside, it’s evident that the band have really considered about different ways in which they can explore their creative spectrum without a complete departure from ‘The Gramotones’ sound. That’s important to them too, you can tell.
(You can read more about that sound in previous posts of mine, for now though, back to the point.)
The Gramotones sound becomes evident as “Horror” gets into full swing but it’s definitely in disguise for this outing. The guitars riffs start off a little cosmic then twist and shred into an uncaged monster by the end of the track.
It’s spooky, moody, haunting and trippy at the same time. Somehow it manages to put an idea of what it’s going to sound like into your mind, then systematically begins to tear strips from that idea.
This is possible through the varied influences evident. Nothing is more testament to this in this song than when the drums become as wild as the onset of thunder and the thrashing of guitar that was just momentarily ago a peaceful meander through the woods.
If you thought this was going to be a peaceful Halloween saunter, think again.
Look, do yourself a favour, turn this up LOUD!!!

Read on… here’s a small poem about it.

    HORROR DRAPED IN DRY ICE

Halloween church bells, is this a thriller
Halloween church bells, what is this Madness
Ahhh, is this the ghost of Crispian Mills
No, this riffing, less LA’s, more Impala.

But people always seem to let them down,
Perhaps that is why they distance themselves
This brings a darker and edgier groove
Try them once,  to hear something different.

    Delving into territory a new
A video to fill the heart with fear
These are troubled men, that’s what their saying
Watch, find their craft has stuck inside your brain.

    Obscure experimentation, this is.
They have added to their sound and impressed.
Extra string, razor bow, will feel to ya
    Gramotones dipped, spook psychedelia

  • The Gramotones Visit Scotland and Wish Lennon Happy Birthday

Regular readers of the site will perhaps already recognise the name of The Gramotones. I first heard and met the band in the summer of this year…remember? No! Shame on you.
Here’s a little reminder of what I’ve already said about them….

“Remember The La’s? Imagine invigorating that spirit with a fresh sounding 2012 go get em approach and you’re not a million miles off”

“There are definitely shades of a certain Liverpudlian sound emanating. Imagine the jangle of days gone by, shaken down and freshened up to make a vibrant 21st century feel good sound.”

Well, a couple of weeks ago The Gramotones released their first single, Soldiers Kiss. The story of unnecessary loss of life during war, or a tongue in daydream of drummer James that portrays the complete annihilation of an entire box full of free range eggs? Watch the video and decide yourself. The song starts lively and continues in the same manner. There’s plenty of musical variation in the song too, with the drumming nodding a knowing wink to a military march. The combination of guitar sounds brings that battlefield effect and vocals are accentuated perfectly, all combining to give a good old indie stomper feel to the sound whilst ensuring the message is delivered appropriately.

At the same time they released the single, the band embarked on a tour. After the launch party in Manchester it was on to Preston, before heading North for their first Scottish gig at Fiddlers Elbow in Edinburgh.
And it was here, I caught up with the band once again.
Worth saying, quite fitting that the evening was a John Lennon birthday celebration, (organised by Edinburgh singer songwriter Aaron Wright) given my previous comments about the bands sound.

Fiddlers Elbow is a quirky little spot for live music, the upper floor holding perhaps 150 people. The exterior’s Georgian architecture is still reflected inside, which gives it a real warm, pleasant, cosy feel.
Aaron put on a number of bands, who all gave their own different variety of warmth to the nights proceedings, before The Gramotones took to the stage at 2350.
By this time, the crowd were in good voice and certainly not lacking the party mood. Getting straight down to business, they immediately had heads nodding. It was pretty clear that these guys were well rehearsed and knew exactly what they were about. Testament to the nature of their perfectionism could be seen as Jake tweaked the EQ to have the sound crisper than it had been all night.
A couple of songs in and it probably wasn’t just me thinking that it’s really hard to pigeon-hole these guys into a particular genre. With that said, why should we.
James’s quite methodical drumming style is interspersed with a wildness usually reserved for references to Animal…but he’s no muppet, for sure. Ryan moves about a fair bit for a bassist, but it’s when he points it skyward that you sense the sheer concentration on his face..key to that perfect delivery.
And Sid..well he’s everything a front man should be…engaging, endearing to the crowd and quite obviously not too upset at the advances of some of the Edinburgh collective. It’s safe to say he invites the few hecklers, but certainly not slow in delivering an effective response each time.
Soldiers Kiss is given an airing as was favourite M62, both well received by the Scottish fans. During Nowhere Man, Aaron joined the band on stage for what appeared for many, the highlight of the night. It certainly summed up the feelings that are still very very alive for the Beatle.
All in all, a great first outing for The Gramotones on Scottish soil.
Unfortunately not one they had too long to revel in though. Another gig in Blackburn the following night meant they could only watch part of Aaron’s set before getting back on the road…dont worry, I’m pretty sure they’ll be back!

Finally, in a fortunate turn of events, I found myself sharing a short part of their journey home. In fact, just long enough to fit in a little interview with the band.
    Here it is…

Tense nervous energy, felt, every sound

Check out the language, silenced yet primal.

  • An Open Letter to Ricky Hatton

Ahead of tomorrow’s press conference I’d like to express an open, heartfelt thanks to Mr Ricky Hatton.

Ricky, I’m pretty sure that, at this press conference, you’re going to announce a comeback.  A decision, which, I’m sure will be scrutinised from pillar to post by all of boxing’s experts. Each will have their own opinion on whether it is the right decision for you and for the sport. So before the mayhem ensues (if indeed that is what happens) and behalf of the fans, I’d like to say a massive thank you for your contribution to British boxing and the sport of boxing in general, over the last 15 years. Like many, I knew from an early stage in your career that we were experiencing something very special. I still remember you stepping out in Madison Square Garden for your 2nd pro fight against Alvarez and thinking, ‘This kid has got some balls.”  Eight years later I had the absolute honour of being at the M.E.N in Manchester the night you won the IBF light welterweight title from Kostya Tszyu. It remains one of the greatest nights of my life. Ask your legions of fans the greatest night of their life and I’m sure thousands will tell you the same thing. You didn’t just win a world title though. You put the spark back into boxing. You made it exciting again, at a time when the likes of Benn and Eubank were fading. You had an irrepressible thirst for success and took on all comers. You made it to the top and then took on the worlds elite. In my eyes you are a true boxing legend. In my eyes, you have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone in the world of boxing. You’ve done it all, and more than most already. For the memories and also now for inspiring a fresh crop of exciting youngsters, I thank you most sincerely.

Do I think you should return to the ring? It doesn’t matter what I think. I’m a fan. OK, a fan who likes to think he knows a little about the sport, but that does not give me the right to judge another man’s decision. What I will say is this. Whatever the announcement tomorrow, I wish you all the success in the world. And if that happens to be a comeback, I’ll be rooting for you all the way.
